It is recommended that any one who owns Mac notebook should know how to reset Mac account. This article will guide you on resetting Mac administrative account password.

Here are different ways to change Mac admin password:

Follow these steps if you have Mac notebook running Mac OS X 10.4 or later versions (the latest version at the time of this writing is Mac Lion)

Step1: Prepare a bootable Zip disk for repairing permissions on your Macbook’s hard drive and a utility CD disc which has all required files to manually repair permissions in your computer. If you don’t have such a tool, please refer to Apple official site for Mac OS X 10.4/10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6 respectively

Step2: Restart Macbook, but don’t boot Mac as a normal operating system to initiate Mac Lion or Mac Snow Leopard because you haven’t given the Power On password for Mac. Such situation is called “tricky state”. Continue with next step when Mac attempts to boot up normally (=No prompt appears on screen)/at least a password dialog box does appear). Now after such login failure, please enter Safe Mode by pressing and holding ` option key while Mac is attempting to load as a normal mode (“black screen” at that time). If there’s only one hard drive in your notebook, then press C during startup; if there are two Mac drives, press C for Mac OS X drive and Option to apply Safe Mode for Mac hard disk. (In Mac OS X 10.1/10.2, the steps are as follows: hold down Shift key during Mac startup then enter Open Firmware Password Utility).

Step3: Launch Disk Utilities in Mac by choosing Tools -> Disk Utility from menu bar on screen or pressing C+U keys together

  • If you don’t see any other Mac HD volume besides Recovery HD, please insert Mac OS CD disc which has all required files of repair permissions utility into optical drive now and reboot again while holding down D key on keyboard until dialog “Open Firmware Password Utility” will appear as above picture shows. Continue to Step4 below after entering Mac OS X 10.4 MacOS Disk Utility at this time.

  • If multiple Mac HD volumes are shown (such as Mac OS formatted Mac hard drive and Recovery HD), please select the Mac OS X partition’s name then click on ‘Mount as Read-Only’ in the pop-up menu or press Command+R keys together to change Mac HDD volume into read-only status. Continue with the next step after Mac OS X 10.4 macOS Disk Utility is launched successfully.

Step4: Click on “Disk Utility” icon from #3 of screenshot below, and choose your Mac hard disk from the list of Macintosh HD volumes which will be displayed then click on the First Aid tab

To clear up any potential confusion, when I say “boot computer” I mean you should turn your Mac on while holding the “apple” key and the “s” key in order to see the terminal. Next, type “/bin/mount -uaw into your terminal without quotes and press enter. Type another command without quotes, this time it’ll be “rm /var/DB/.applesetupdone” followed by a press of entering again. Finally, just type reboot (without quotes) before pressing enter one last time to restart your computer; that is assuming you are using a mac as opposed to other types of computers such as PC, Linux-based, etc
